Research
Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery is a research-led institution. Based at the Kelburn Campus of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, the Gallery prepares and presents exhibitions, public programmes and publications that contribute new knowledge and critical discourse on art and its histories.
We work with artists, academics, scholars and professional colleagues, enabling productive exchanges between art and other disciplines.
Our work is driven by a clear belief in the value of creative and critical thinking as tools to navigate the complexities of lived experience. We are also convinced of the pedagogical value of documenting our work and building resources with which students can engage.
The Gallery has a special commitment to the history of art in Aotearoa New Zealand. We provide access to the New Zealand Art Archive, a research resource stored in the New Zealand Art Research & Study Centre (NZARSC).
The New Zealand Art Research & Study Centre is a growing collection of books, catalogues, theses, periodicals, archives, images and ephemera, largely built through an active exchange programme with other institutions and from donations by current and former university staff, students, artists, collectors, curators and art historians. Through the NZARSC, researchers can also access the physical archives of the Gallery and Victoria University of Wellington’s Art Collection.
