Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection is a public resource with many works on display in the public spaces of the University’s various campuses.

Our searchable database provides comprehensive information about works in the Art Collection. You can also follow the Art Collection on Instagram to see more of the behind the scenes work that goes into the installations about campus. If you would like to access works on display or in storage, or dig deeper into the Collection archive, you can make an appointment by contacting sophie.thorn@vuw.ac.nz.

For Staff

Works of art hanging in public spaces on the University campuses are likely to belong to Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University Art Collection. You can easily identify them by the accompanying wall label.

If you would like more information about a work hanging near you, or wish to discuss the installation or relocation of an art work, please contact sophie.thorn@vuw.ac.nz.

Please note, we require ten working days notice for non-urgent requests.

If you believe a work of art is in danger in any way, or has been unexpectedly removed, please contact the Adam Art Gallery team immediately. If you should need to report an incident please download our Incident Report Form.

Loans

We regularly lend works from Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection for exhibition in other institutions. The borrowing institution should meet the following requirements:

  • The Loan Request is received at least three months prior to the start of the Loan Period. This enables the assessment of the work’s suitability for loan and allows time to complete the necessary preparations.
  • The Loan Request details the purpose for which the work of art is required, the proposed Loan Period and relevant Exhibition dates.
  • The Loan Request includes a satisfactory Facilities Report where possible.

Reproductions

We can provide researchers and publishers with high resolution images of works in Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection.

All images are supplied in 300 dpi high resolution TIFF format unless otherwise specified by the applicant.

In several instances the University does not hold copyright permission for works in the Art Collection. In these cases the applicant will need to obtain copyright permission from an external copyright holder. Where possible, the Adam Art Gallery team can provide contact details for this person or organisation.

For requests external to the University a reproduction fee may apply. You can read our Image Request Terms and Conditions here.

Gifts and Bequests

We encourage gifting to Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University Art Collection and are happy to talk you through the process. The Art Collection’s acquisition programme is facilitated through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation and managed by the Adam Art Gallery Director.

Tours

In 2024 we will be taking regular tours of Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection every first Friday of the month at midday. These tours will begin from the Hub on the Kelburn Campus. These tours are free and open to the public.
