The Holding is a sequence of photographs preoccupied with the pleasures of walking and reading, of experiencing the city as a book or a song.  

Allan McDonald is an eminent photographer, who engages with his image archive of more than 50 years to curate narratives around social history and place. The Holding is the third photobook by Allan under the Rim Books’ imprint following Between the Silence and the Flame – 2016 and Carbon Empire – 2017.  Carbon Empire won the New Zealand Photobook of the Year Award. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Auckland Art Gallery, Te Papa and the Chartwell Collection. He is a lecturer in photography at Unitec, Te Whare Wānanga o Wairaka, Auckland.
