This book was published in association with the 2014 exhibition, Cinema & Painting, Adam Art Gallery’s contribution to the 2014 New Zealand International Festival. This ambitious exhibition represented a continuation of two directions in the Gallery’s programme: of investigations into the history of film and photography in exhibitions such as Anthony McCall: Drawing with Light (2010) and Dark Sky (2011); and of shows emerging from scholarship, such as Billy Apple: New York, 1969-1973 (2009) and Peripheral Relations: Marcel Duchamp and New Zealand Art 1960-2011 (2012). A major exhibition that offered a rethinking of the relation between film and painting, Cinema & Painting highlighted connections between an international group of pioneering filmmakers and historically significant artists, as well as a newer generation of artists. The exhibition drew on curator Michelle Menzies’ doctoral research on media aesthetics, and was developed with Daniel Morgan of the University of Chicago, whose work focuses on film and aesthetics.
