Film screening

6.00pm 02 November 2022

Splash, 1984
dir Ron Howard, 1h 51m, PG Coarse language & sexual references
with mermaid tail-maker Robert Short

A young man is reunited with a mermaid who saved him from drowning as a boy. He falls in love with her, not knowing who or what she is. This screening will feature an interview by Megan Dunn with Splash tail-maker Robert Short.

Robert Short is an academy award winning special effects designer who for over four decades has brought to life many of the movie screen’s most indelible and best loved character icons. In addition to the enchanting mermaid from Splash, Short created the outrageous Beetlejuice afterlife inhabitants, for which he won his academy award, as well as the man-eating sharks of Lethal Weapon 4, the inspirational heart light of E.T. and development of the terrorizing design of The Predator

This is the first in our Sirens of the Silver Screen film series running every second Wednesday in November alongside Megan Dunn: The Mermaid Chronicles. These films celebrate, play with and reference the mermaid in popular culture and mythology. Each film will be prefaced by a conversation conducted between Megan Dunn and a special guest. Films screened with thanks to Aro Video.
